About the Artist
Robert W. Lauer
A former Resident Artist of The d'Art Center, Norfolk, VA and selected as Norfolk's 2024 Harborfest Festival poster artist. Living along the Intercoastal Waterway my works focus on our local rivers, creeks, canals and the Chesapeake Bay, stretching from the Northern Neck of Virginia to the Currituck Sound of North Carolina.
Exploring the natural vivid colors found at sunrise and sunset, I try to capture the interplay of sky and light on the water, balancing the harmony of simple hidden geometry. Working from quick color studies and sketches on-site for more realistic hues, I create a palette mixing only 4 acrylic paint colors (CMYK) along with white. These are then applied by palette knife to create a more impressionistic effect, allowing the further mixing of colors by the viewers eye.
With a Masters from the College of Design, NC State, and a Studio Art minor from Washington & Lee University, my career combined art, design and marketing as Director of Industrial Design with several international corporations in the U.S., Germany, Japan and China. When home in the U.S. I continued my passion for watercolor, oils and acrylics donating artworks for charitable events.
